A passion for Art from textile history
My family have been involved with weaving fabrics since the 1920's. Jacquard woven fabrics are a passion of mine. During 30 years of manufacturing and sales experiences in the furnishing fabric industry I have collected a large archive of textiles and related artwork coupled with technical information on how the fabric is made. The Point Paper Art Company was set up to promote items available from our archive (www.richardmrsmith.com/archive) and bring the wonderful lost craft of Point Paper drawing to a new audience. The detailed Point Paper artworks hold binary maps of weave codes once used in the formation of patterns in beautiful fabrics. In the days before CAD, perforated loom card was created from the point papers weave codes. The perforated card's binary codes were read by the Jacquard weaving machine that is part of the loom that weaves pattern in fabric. Today modern weaving mills use electronics to 'read' the patterns from micro chips. No beautiful point paper artworks and no perforated cards! Ironically, the binary codes and perforated card reading machine that Frenchman Jean Marie Jacquard perfected in 1801 is a foundation stone that lead to the development of computers today.
