Potters and artists in Anchorage Alaska
We both fell in love with pottery during college art electives -- Jonathan while studying architecture, and Jessica while studying art education.
There's just something special about sitting at the wheel and turning a ball of clay into a beautiful vessel. We believe life is better when it includes art and beauty, and pottery is a form of art that you can use every day. We love all art, and enjoy making art in all forms. But pottery is so much more personal than a picture on the wall - you are meant to hold it, feel it, interact with it, and use it every day.
With our new home in Alaska we finally had the space and means to start up a full home studio. We bought a second wheel, installed a kiln, and arranged a working space with the tables, storage and shelving needed to be productive. We were finally able to begin producing new pieces regularly, and it was time to start sharing our work with the world! We invite you to join us in our journey. Every piece is unique and original, and that's the way we hope to keep it -- we never want to lose the joy of adventure and discovery.
Our pieces are inspired by the natural wonders around us in our Alaskan setting, and we believe that nature and pottery go hand-in-hand. There are very few art forms that combine such straight-from-the-earth products as pottery. From the clay to the silica and minerals that make up the glaze, it’s all just a combination of earth, the Potter’s hands, and heat! With that connection in mind, we have begun making our own glazes from raw materials, and continue to expand the range of or colors and effects. This takes time, effort, and research, but we feel that it ties us more closely to the earth as well as the long tradition of potters since ancient times.
We only sell pieces we feel meets a standard of quality and craftsmanship, and we aim to continually grow in our craft. Still, none of our pieces are “perfect”, and we think that fact is absolutely perfect! If you want perfection, then there are plenty of mass production options available...but if you want hand-crafted ware made with love, thought, and passion we encourage to give our shop a browse and see if our pieces agree with your style and taste. If you love something, we encourage you to buy it without delay, because every piece is one-of-a-kind!
Artfully yours,
Jonathan and Jessica
