We knit alpaca, yak, and angora rabbit socks on our farm
Hi, My name is Leslee and my husband and I live on a farm in southwestern Pennsylvania. My husband is a podiatrist, had some great ideas for sock design, and suggested we buy a sock knitting machine and make our own socks. It took us 2 years to figure out how to make socks( it was a lot more complicated than we expected). We decided to make alpaca and merino socks because natural fibers are all we wear on the farm- no matter what the temperature . These fibers wick away moisture naturally so you stay cool in summer and super warm in winter. We first come up with a design, knit the body of the sock, close the toes on a separate machine then dye and finish each sock. There are many steps involved in the process, but there is also great satisfaction in the creation. Our socks are different from other wool socks because they are made right here in the United States, we take great pride in that. They are very soft and comfortable. We now use alpaca, yak, and angora rabbit yarn because these animals have a hollow fiber which provides better insulation than the merino sheep. We are outdoors all winter taking care of animals on the farm, we wanted the warmest fiber available, we found it!
