Frequently asked questions

Why use a beeswax and coconut oil blend?

Beeswax is a natural air purifier, and coconut oil helps with the cold and hot throw of the scent. Coconut oil also helps prevent the candle from tunneling when lit.

What is does cold and hot throw mean?

Cold throw is how far the scent reaches when the candle is unlit. Hot throw is how far the scent reaches when the candle is lit.

How do I trim the wick?

The best way to trim your candle wick is to use a wick trimmer. Click the following link to check out our wick trimmers.

If you don’t have a wick trimmer, another option is to use your fingers to pinch off the extra crispy parts before lighting.

Why is my candle flame so low?

This could be due to a few factors. The first may be that the wick is too short. Wax is fuel and if the wick isn’t able to pull up enough wax, the flame remains low. Another factor could be that the prior lighting burned too hot and not enough fresh wick remained above the wax surface. Lastly, it could be due to the wick being smothered by too much wax. My best advice is to let the candle keep burning even with a low flame. The flame will most likely be normal the next time the wick is lit.

My candle will not stay lit. What do I do?

Pour a small amount of wax out, leaving 1/4” of the wick exposed.

Care instructions

When burning the candle for the first time, allow the wax to melt all the way to the glass for optimal burn - approximately 4 hours.

Wax has a memory and will only burn as far as the prior burn.

Always trim or pinch the extra crispy part of the wick off before each use - approximately 1/4”.

Never leave candle burning unattended.

How is the white beeswax made?

The white beeswax used at AMS is achieved by using a multi-stage process that starts with selecting beeswax that is already naturally much lighter in color. This first step is extremely important—if the process began with very yellow wax, achieving the ivory tone without chemical bleaching would be impossible. From there, natural clarification is used and ultra-fine filtration to remove pollen and other color-carrying particles. Only food-grade filtration materials are used (no chemical bleaches or additives) so the wax stays as natural as possible while becoming exceptionally pure and light in color. The result is a consistent ivory tone that comes from careful selection and processing, not from bleaching or harsh treatments.

What’s the difference between fragrance oils and essential oils in candles?

Fragrance oils are popular in candles because they create stronger scents and come in endless varieties. However, even when labeled “natural,” most are made with synthetic chemicals. Some may include a small amount of plant-based material, but they’re largely lab-made, which can cause issues for those with sensitivities.

Essential oils, on the other hand, are extracted directly from plants by steam distillation or cold pressing. They’re a more natural option but have lighter scent throw and fewer scent choices. That’s why many candles claim to use essential oils but mostly rely on synthetic fragrance.

At AMS, we use only essential oils so your home can smell beautiful with scents you can feel good about.
