Inspired by India
I began traveling to India many years ago and found the traditional crafts and handicrafts truly inspiring. I wanted to bring back beautiful pieces to share with people in my country. I began collecting Indian silver jewellery both old and new, for my own collection and to sell. This was the beginnings of fabriika.
My visits to India continued and the beautiful jewellery there inspired me to begin designing my own range. I have tried my hand at many arts and crafts but in designing I have found something that I really love doing; it is such a joy to see a design idea come to life. I took jewellery classes in India to understand the process of silversmithing so that I could incorporate traditional elements into my designs. My jewellery is made in a small workshop in Rajasthan, where the silversmith uses traditional methods to craft jewellery. I spend many happy hours with the jeweller while my jewellery is being made; choosing gemstones, finalising designs and drinking lots of chai!
My love of India continues and has been strengthened - I ran a business there for two years which gave me insight into the human spirit, diversity and complexity of Indian culture and life and through it I formed strong friendships and links.
