Biography & Artist Statement

Richness, elegance, creative diversity, and emotional characterization are the hallmarks of this Texas artist born in 1966. When combined with his dramatic use of lighting, shadow, and color, his canvases quickly create a mood of gentle and vivid emotions. Even more significant is Mr. Gonzalez's sense of detail, not only in the realism of his subject matter, but in the attention he takes to prepare his canvases and panels. Primarily self-taught, Mr. Gonzalez has gained invaluable experience through extensive book studies and by attending museums.

Mr. Gonzalez states, "Although realistic and contemporary in style, the paintings I create are developed in the Old Masters' tradition of color glazes, and I am currently adding dimensions of surrealism and trompe l'oeil with a sense of creative humor to my still life paintings. Since the first day I began to draw, I've always had a love for still life. Unlike other genres, still life allows me more control over lighting, composition, arrangement, design, and color. My work is influenced by the artwork of the Dutch Masters, Caravaggio, Harnett, Dali, and Magritte."

Mr. Gonzalez's paintings, created in oil have won numerous awards including the Grand Prize in International Artist Magazine's Still Life Competition 2002 and Finalist in the 2006 Competition. He was recently accepted into the traveling museum exhibition, “The New Reality: The Frontier of Realism in the 21st Century.” This exhibition was exhibited in 10-15 museums across the country from 2008-2011. In the twenty years that he has been painting professionally, he has held a number of one-man and group shows, and has developed a following of private collectors and admirers throughout the United States and Europe.

His organization memberships include Oil Painters of America, the American Artist Professional League, National Oil And Acrylic Painter’s Society, and the International Guild of Realism.

Inspired by the techniques of the Old Masters, this diverse artist creates realistic portrait, figurative and still life paintings in oil that strive to preserve the tradition of realism in art.“ My goal as an artist is to capture the beauty of a subject on my canvas, and through it convey a lasting aesthetic inspiration that will stay with the viewer.”

Judith Mroski-Gonzalez was born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1966, but has lived in Texas since 1973. Inspired by her grandfather, who was a painter, she decided to pursue art as a career. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Applied Design & Visual Arts from the University of Houston at Clear Lake in 1989, and worked for 15 years as a graphic designer. She met her husband, artist George A. Gonzalez, in 1987 when they both were working as graphic artists for a local company; they married in 1988 and have been constant companions in their pursuit of artistic excellence ever since. In 2005, after 17 years of marriage, Judith and George were blessed with the birth of their son, Douglas.

Ms. Mroski-Gonzalez devotes most of her time to painting portraits & figurative subjects. She has been commissioned to paint portraits for clients that have included television personalities, CEO's, doctors and members of the space program. Ms. Mroski-Gonzalez's paintings have been exhibited in galleries in California, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, & Texas, where she has participated in several group shows. One of her self-portraits was featured in an article in the November, 2005 issue of Southwest Art Magazine.
