Frequently asked questions
What is your Returns and Exchanges Policy?
Standard Policy: We strictly do not accept returns or exchanges for a "change of mind." Due to the high value of natural opals, all sales are final. Please review all photos and videos carefully.
UK Customers: Under UK distance selling laws, UK buyers have 14 days from delivery to request a cancellation. The buyer is solely responsible for return shipping costs. Refunds are issued only once the opal is safely returned in its original, undamaged condition.
Faulty Items: If an item arrives genuinely faulty, damaged in transit, or not as described, please contact us within 14 days for a remedy. In these specific, verified cases, we will cover return postage.
How do I care for my natural Boulder Opal?
While Australian Boulder Opals benefit from a natural ironstone backing that provides structural stability, the opal face and the surrounding stone matrix can sometimes be softer mineral mixes (similar in hardness to glass). Because of this, they require mindful care—especially when set in high-wear jewellery like rings.
To clean your stone, use only warm water, mild soap, and a soft cloth. Never use ultrasonic cleaners, harsh chemicals, bleach, or abrasive materials. We strongly recommend removing your opal jewellery before heavy manual work, gardening, or swimming to prevent scratching, chipping, or dulling the naturally polished surface.
Are your opals sealed, varnished, or treated?
Absolutely not. At GothicZen Opals, our strict policy is 100% natural. We never use artificial sealers, varnishes, resins, or epoxy to artificially enhance the shine or hide imperfections. While some in the industry use these tricks, artificial coatings almost always yellow, cloud, or peel over time, ruining the stone's appearance.
We ship our stones exactly as the earth made them—bare and naturally polished. If you personally wish to add a protective layer or temporarily enhance the sheen once the stone is yours, we recommend avoiding plastics and instead using a natural, non-permanent option like a light application of pure beeswax or Renaissance Wax. Our stones are NOT enhanced with these waxes.
Are your opals treated to make them artificially darker (like the sugar process)?
Never. Some opals on the market (particularly Ethiopian or specific matrix opals) are treated using a "sugar and acid" process. This involves soaking the porous stone in sugar, then using strong acid to burn and carbonize the sugar inside the stone, turning the background artificially black to make the colours pop.
GothicZen Opals are strictly 100% natural and untreated. Our Boulder Opals and Yowah Nuts get their incredible depth and contrast naturally from the dark, rich Australian ironstone they formed inside over millions of years. No acids, no dyes, no tricks.
What is the difference between your solid opals and doublets or triplets?
We exclusively sell solid opals. A solid opal is exactly what it sounds like: a single, intact piece of stone shaped directly from the earth. The opal face is naturally attached to its original ironstone host rock.
Doublets and Triplets are manufactured composites. A doublet is a paper-thin slice of opal glued to a dark artificial backing (often black glass or plastic). A triplet adds a clear glass or quartz dome glued on top. Because they rely on adhesives, doublets and triplets are less valuable and can easily be ruined if water seeps in and clouds the glue. With our solid opals, you are investing in a durable, uncompromised, 100% natural stone.
