Kaskolos

I am a recovering academic. After many years in education I decided to practice what I preach and started selling the aquaculture products I had been studying for years. Now I own a sea vegetable farm and operate an aquaponic facility. The idea is to strive for permaculture and sustainable production. The kelp is a line grown winter crop. This means we put it out in fall and it grows till the next spring. It doesn't impact fisheries or fish habitat, in fact, it adds to the fish habitat out there in the North Atlantic. The big fronds are used to make food and the cuttings are used to make fertilizer. The aquaponics is also a sustainable endeavor. I use some of the fertilizer from the kelp in my aquaponics system to provide potassium, good bacteria and other micronutrients. The vegetables I sell locally during the fall, winter and spring when locally grown produce is poorly supplied to Maine.
