It goes hand in hand - photographs of nature brought to life printed on wood!
It began with a trip to the mountains of North Carolina, photographing waterfalls with my brother Jimmy. We had talked about it for years but I had always been too busy. Then major life circumstances in both our lives had shown us that the here and now was so very fleeting and we needed to stop making excuses. If we were going to enjoy time together as brothers we needed to make the time and just do it. So the resulting trip to the mountains around Linville and Boone that year and each year to follow has yielded more and more incredible waterfalls, photographs and memories.
Well as I set out to do something with these images, I discovered a process where by my photographs could be printed onto a piece of milled pine board. I found a printer in North Carolina that does the process and as far as I can tell by my research - they're the only ones printing on rough cut milled wood. They don't sand it down to a flat board - removing all the character of the wood - it retains all the texture and grooving of the original wood. So my art is enhanced in a three dimensional way as well as through the smell of the wood and by the "significance" the weight of the board brings to the piece. It's ready for hanging with a sawtooth hanger attached.
It's been an exciting way for me to present my art and I'm captivated by what the process brings to the artwork.
