Frequently asked questions

What is letterpress?

Letterpress is a printing method unlike any other printing method today. The hand-mixed ink does not sit on top of the paper. It’s pressed into the paper leaving behind a beautiful indentation. At Flywheel, I strive for a deep impression every time.

Why does letterpress cost more than other printing methods?

The letterpress printing process is more involved than a standard offset press or your desktop printer. The costs associated with letterpress printing at They Flywheel include:

- Designing

- Polymer plates (each color, imprint, and back-of-card design require a separate, unique plate)

- High-quality supplies such as hand-mixed inks, paper, and wax seals

- Press time (each piece is hand-fed, one at a time, into the press)

- Experienced and technical skill required

Do you offer totally customized invitation suites?

Yes! Check out my website for details about custom wedding invitation suites.

Solid Areas of Color Disclaimer

Solid ink color is difficult to control and there will be some color variation throughout the run. Some pieces may have darker ink density, some may have lighter density. We keep a sharp eye on consistency while printing, but be aware that ink on press is added and controlled manually.

Textured
It may be necessary to print with less ink density in solid areas of ink in order to keep fine details in your artwork crisp. We call the resulting mottled ink appearance “textured.” Depending on the color you have specified in combination with the paper, there may be more or less tecxture in the final printed pieces. Darker colors on a toothy cotton stock demonstrate the most texture.
