Treasures for you...
I’ve been sewing, crafting, and repurposing things for about as long as I can remember (a number higher than I’m willing to admit!) and was a “picker” of great stuff before that term was used to describe how I find treasures. I learned many skills from my parents and grandparents and think of them often as I live in the present with the continuing influence of the past.
My first adventures in sewing were as I watched and learned from my mother, designing and making dresses for my Barbie and her entourage. In the fifth grade I made my first dress to wear: a blue/green paisley Jackie O. sleeveless dress that zipped up the back, called a "shift" back then in the 60s. I also made a little purse from the fabric remnants....
I sewed for my daughters, now adults and my best friends, as they grew. One of my favorite portraits shows them wearing burgundy velvet dresses I repurposed from the bridesmaid gown worn in a friend's wedding years earlier. I added antique lace collars and buttons.....
From my family I also gained a rich knowledge of processes for cleaning, restoring, repairing, repurposing, reinventing....in general giving new life to something that might otherwise be discarded or overlooked....which begs the introduction of a major mission of The Velveteen Garden: environmental stewardship.
