Many towns boast houses which are rumored to be haunted, but at most the “hauntings” typically amount to a creak here, a shriek there, a vague sense of unease when passing by. The tiny town of Peakwich has the real thing, however – a looming manse encased in brambles which locals have dubbed “Moribund Manor”. As haunted houses go, there is nothing subtle about this one: the trees around it have long since died, fog enshrouds it on the clearest of evenings and, within 800 feet of the looming edifice, the temperature drops no less than 20 degrees. These oddities pale in comparison, though, to the fact that Moribund Manor is unambiguously inhabited by the deceased victims of every tragic accident or unfortunate circumstance in Peakwich’s history. They include (clockwise from the lower left): Antoine Caput, the only suicide known to have successfully decapitated himself; Little Lorelei Lapides, trampled by oxen whilst sweeping the path; the Sallow sisters (terminal ennui); Owlwin Kestrel, born with his head facing backwards and finally succumbing to cumulative brain damage secondary to continually walking into walls; Rowena Reticule, who drowned subsequent to sleepwalking into a lake; Mme. Bilitus Bathory, from nutritional complications resulting from an exclusively plasma-based diet; Karinina Conniption, suffocated while holding her breath during a tantrum; Petunia Portage, trapped in a chimney while trying to spy on her ex-paramour; Balfour Ballon, tricked out of his head by a mischievous djinn; Daedalus and Rosabelle Deaddraught, drank poison during a pretend tea party; Jimmy Aldabra, Jr., nibbled to death by his giant tortoise; Embeth Ethery, tumbled out of a hot air balloon; Eugene and Augustus Malheure, just evil and creepy kids, no one was even sorry; and Monsieur Lechapeau, set upon by a crazed mob unnerved by his outrageous headwear. Even a giant octopus which was caught up in a haddock net has been spied undulating around the mansion. When one adds to all that an animated set of haunted armor clanking about by the light of a clouded harvest moon, no one is going near the place, believe me. Such a monument to tragedy! So if you are ever in the mood for a REAL haunted house, Peakwich is the place. Have a safe trip.
