There’s a ton of special items on Etsy, and categories help shoppers find just the thing they’re looking for. When you’re creating a listing, you assign it to the most specific category that fits your item. Shoppers can use categories to filter searches on Etsy and when they’re shopping using Etsy’s navigation menu. Categories also act as tags, helping us match your items with more relevant searches. You should select the categories that describe what your item is, not how it’s used or what it’s made for.
The category and subcategories you choose also determine which attributes you can add to your listing. You’ll have access to different attributes based on the category you choose. Attributes work in tandem with your tags and can affect your item’s placement in Etsy search.
We make regular updates to categories based on your feedback, changes on Etsy, and research on buyer and seller behavior. You can explore all of the categories on Etsy in this category list.
Going forward, we’ll update this article when we make any updates to listing categories on Etsy. If you don’t see a category that you think best describes your product, send us a suggestion via our feedback form.
June 2023 Updates

October 2022 Updates
New Sustainability attributes
We’ve added new attributes that allow you to indicate if your items are made from environmentally conscious materials or are designed to be reusable or reduce waste. A few examples of these new attributes include: Upcycled, Plastic-Free, Vegan, and Reusable. Adding these attributes now will not affect buyer experiences or your listings yet, but we’ll keep you updated when and how they will. New Car Accessories categories
We’ve added multiple new subcategories including Car Air Fresheners, Car Charms, Car Coasters, Key Fob Covers, License Plate Covers & Frames, Seat Covers, Steering Wheel Covers. When listing these items, choose the most specific category option available.
New Calendars & Planners categories
We’ve added multiple new subcategories including Desk Calendars, Pocket Calendars, Wall Calendars. When listing these items, choose the most specific category option available.
New Window Art Mount Type Attribute for Glass Art
The Art Mount Type attribute lets you add more detail about how a piece of art is designed to be displayed. Now you can choose “Window” as an option for listings in the Glass Art category.
A few categories were renamed
The Bean Bag Toss category has been renamed Cornhole. The Basket Weaving category is now Woven Baskets.
July 2022 Updates
New Lighting categories
We’ve added multiple new subcategories to Lighting, including Garden Lights, Pathway Lights, Post Lights, Step Lights, and Deck Lights.
New Furniture categories
We’ve added new subcategories to Furniture, including Hall Trees, Standing Coat Racks, Umbrella Stands, and Filing Cabinets.
New Scrub Caps category
We’ve added a new subcategory to Accessories for Scrub Cap listings.
Changed name of Unisex Adult Clothing to Gender-Neutral Clothing
The Unisex Adult Clothing category has been renamed Gender-Neutral Clothing.
Changed name of Entryway Furniture to Entryway & Mudroom Furniture
We updated the category name to include more types of furniture.
Removed Baby categories
We removed three categories for policy reasons: Baby Nests, Crib Bumpers, and Moses Baskets & Hammocks. These items can no longer be sold on Etsy.
May 2022 Updates
New Home & Living categories
We’ve added three new categories to the Home & Living category: Mug Rugs, Bedspreads, and Desk Name Plates. Relevant listings will be automatically moved to these new categories. You can review your listings’ new categories and make changes at any time.
New Craft Machine Files categories
We’ve added multiple new categories for craft machine files including: 3D Printer Files, Cutting Machine Files, Embroidery Machine Files, and Knitting Machine Files. Relevant listings will be automatically moved to these new categories.
New Roller Skate Accessories categories
